Anonymous “Barstool” social media accounts are sparking alarm across Central Texas schools, with parents and educators warning they’re fueling a wave of cyberbullying and student harm.
These are unofficial, student-run Instagram pages often posing as school sports accounts, but have become platforms for targeting peers. Central Texas school leaders call the trend “extremely concerning,” and lawmakers say it’s part of a statewide, and even national, crisis tied to rising youth depression, anxiety, and suicide. While the Texas Legislature considers age restrictions on
minors’ access to social media, officials urge families not to wait. Parents are encouraged to watch for changes in
behavior, keep open communication, and consider whether their children should be online.
Meta says it’s adding protections for youth accounts and exploring school partnerships to flag harmful content more
quickly, but for now, the best defense is strong parental awareness and early action.
